Effortless Cool defined by an image

If I were to make a dictionary of over used phrases of the English language I would surely include 'effortless style' and accompanying my text would be this image. In practice, for most of us at least, pulling of this style is anything but effortless. Successfully achieving this look is very much like achieving the 'bed head' hairstyle...copious amounts of product and mirror preening are required! This chap as captured by the Sartorialist is effortless cool.

Ordinarily, I might have just linked to this Sartorialist capture over on our twitter account but I felt that it deserved more than just a tinyurl link. Points will surely be knocked off for posing with the cigarette but everything else about it is perfect. Giancinephile recently posted on the Cult of the Effortless Cool where he discussed Paul Helbers words in Man About Town where he described how a 'dirty' casual French look makes a man attractive and intriguing and I do buy into that. Of course, I very much enjoy making the effort but on my off days, I wouldn't mind looking like the chap above...

With regards to the photographer, well, over the course of the last two days we have all been reminded (if there was any doubt) that the Sartorialist is certainly very much still sitting pretty at the top of all Street Style blogs.

No no no no NO! His hair is DREADFUL. It looks like mine when I've just towel dried it crossed with a mad professor's. The outfit is ok but tame. As for the Sartorialist... sorry, but Garance Dore is my favourite nowadays.

Ha, you are being very judgemental this evening! His hair is being blown in the wind so I think the mad professor claim is harsh to say the least! I agree that Garance Dore takes better pictures but sadly she rarely points her camera at men...which is why until she focuses on more men she will not replace the Sartorialist as my personal favourite!

Fashionable MakeUp. Face and Hair Cosmetics of the Season 2009

EYE SHADOW

After getting a sneak peek at the circus carousel center stage at Chanel, the makeup line’s creative director Peter Philips was inspired to gild the models’ eyes. Plus, the lack of accessories in the collection made him want to turn their eyes into ornaments, as he said. Bringing the hue all the way up to the brow really enhances the eye.

Were seen at Baby Phat, BCBG Max Azria, Badgley Mischka, Versace and Chanel.

Apply several coats of golden shadow, leaving lashes bare. Mascara clumps would change the look, Philips said. It would suddenly become very disco.

Cosmetics: Kevyn Aucoin The Sculpting Powder, Chanel Ombre Essentielle in Gold, CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 3-Kit Shadow in Golden Sunset.

CHUNKY WAVES

Bumble and bumble stylist Laurent Philippon, who gave models at Preen gorgeous waves with stick-straight ends, wanted the hair to have a kind of rumpled sexiness—like late-’80s Kim Basinger in Batman and 9½ Weeks.

Were seen at: Ports 1961, Gucci, Preen, and Salvatore Ferragamo.

After coating wet hair with a heat-protecting spray, tousle strands with fingers while blow-drying, you need a bit of imperfection, Philippon said. Spritz hair with a medium-hold hairspray, then wrap small sections around a one-inch curling iron and rake through with fingers.

Cosmetics: Kérastase Vinyle Nutri-Sculpt, Bumble and bumble Bb Spray de Mode, TRESemmé Heat Tamer Spray.

And the winner is....

Happy Tuesday to one and all. As we all return back to our 'normal' lives following the long festive break all remnants of Christmas will be coming down to day (sadly the tree will be in the trash by this evening) and even more heartbreaking...there are very few presents left to open. However, our Happy Socks sponsored sock giveaway allows one lucky reader with the chance to start the new afresh and the draw has just taken place...queue drum rolls...and the winner is Fuschiaboy, congratulations! Thanks for entering everyone and for those of you who didn't win, better luck next time!

Binge Beauty Buy: Ways To Cash In Your Sephora Gift Cards: Givenchy Pop Gloss!

($23, Givenchy, Sephora)
Of the 15 bajillion glosses in my bag, the one I dig around for the most -- and receive by far the most questions and compliments on -- is Givenchy's Pop Gloss (#444). It's a shiny, sparkly, glittery, festive (the fireworks-y packaging! so fun!), clump-free magenta, and it smells like pureed raspberries. It's like a berry party for your lips and you're totally invited. Actually, you're hosting the damn thing. It's perfect for what I like to refer to as "mullet makeup" -- toned-down, it's-oh-so-quiet eyes, big, crazy wow-pow-holy-cow lips. You know, party in the back, business in the front.

Another great Givenchy gloss is Crazy Beige #406:
($23.50, Givenchy, Amazon.com)
This one looks and tastes like honey and goes on smooth and, fortunately, does not attract bees.

What's Your Sign, Baby?

($42, Gold Saturn)
Oh, glad you asked. I'm a Leo. Leos are known for being self-centered in an AWESOME way. We LOVE talking about ourselves, because we're AWESOME, so why would we wanna talk about anyone else? We LOVE spending money, to help build our awesome empire, and we're super fun. What's your sign? Oh wait. No one cares. No, for real, Leos are supposedly really giving and caring. SEE! EVERYTHING'S all about Leos. And since we're talking about me, one shirt this Leo (me!) would REALLY like is this astrology map tee by Miami designer David Jon Acosta, who's a total DIY success story with his Gold Saturn line of guys' and girls' tees, and he's an absolute sweetheart and hustler too. RESPECT it.

Best Bow Necklace!

($213, Shaoo, Letrainbleu.com)
I love this super-statementy 19th century Deco bow necklace by French designers Shaoo (Wen Wei and Ho Yuk). The white bow is made of leather, which makes it all the more luscious, and pairing it with bold red lipstick is pure perfection. I'm also convinced that the necklace has magic powers -- like, I'm pretty sure that if you wear it, you can conjur peacocks to magically, amazingly just appear in the walkway of stores called Peacocks.

A natural beauty
